Monroe County Probate Records Index (1850s-1939)
This database is an index of probate case files relating to the settlement of deceased individuals’ estates from the 1850s to 1939. Some of the information and records within the probate case file may include: death date and names of heirs of the deceased individual, wills, inventories of real and personal property, administrator/executor reports, statements of claims against estates, resale or transfer of real and personal property, receipts, and final judgments on estate settlement. Some probate cases were not settled until years after the individual passed away. Case files can range from just a page or two to several hundred pages in length.
Court Record Copy Service:
The Monroe County Local History Room will provide a copy of a probate case file upon request. The copy cost will vary depending on the number of pages of the case file requested. To request copies of probate case files held by LHR, simply click on “Get Copy of Record” and that particular probate case entry will be added to the “shopping cart.” Then either checkout your order online or print the “shopping cart” and mail it to us.
At this time, copies of probate case files are only able to be delivered through the mail. Electronic delivery is not available due to the large file sizes of the probate records. If you would prefer to stop into the Monroe County Local History Room & Museum to look at a particular probate case file and transfer the digital files onto a personal flash drive, please call 608-269-8680 or email History@co.monroe.wi.us to arrange a time to do so.
