About the Research Library

Visitors to the Monroe County Local History Room & Museum can explore county and family history in our Research Library—an essential resource for genealogists and local historians.  Some of the many resources available to the public include:  

  • Family files and histories
  • Club and organizational records
  • Business directories and phone books
  • Cemetery records and select maps
  • State, Federal, and non-population census records
  • Church records
  • Court records
  • Naturalization records
  • Institutional records
  • Military records
  • Tomah Indian Agency records
  • Newspapers
  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Probate records
  • Tax records
  • School records
  • Vital records (pre-1907)
  • A variety of other historical and genealogical resources for Monroe and nearby counties.  


Note:  the most commonly used resources have been indexed and are searchable on the History Room’s website: www.MCLHR.org.  Resource copies can be provided for a Copy Service Fee.  The Copy Service Fees do not apply if you access the resources in person in the Research Library.  The only potential charge is the photocopy charge which is 25 cents per copy (letter-sized).

Open Tuesday - Saturday: 9AM - 4PM
Closed Sunday & Monday
Closed major holidays
Free Admission.  No appointment to use the Research Library is needed but is encouraged.  Please call 608-269-8680 or email History@co.monroe.wi.us to schedule a research appointment or ask research questions.

Equipment:

The Research Library features multiple ScanPro Microfilm Reader/Scanner machines to view, scan, and make copies from microfilmed resources.  There is no charge to use these machines but each copy made is 25 cents.  Digital scans can also be saved to a removable USB drive (user provided).  Staff will provide assistance with getting started on these machines.
